1024 Penny Rugs: A Traditional American Folk Art

Women of the 1800’s collected scraps of old wool clothing to create penny rugs, called that because of the various sized coins that were used as templates for cutting out the circles that were then stitched together. Penny rugs are not rugs placed on the floor, but rather “rugs” used as runners or wall hangings. You will learn how to make a penny rug using basic circle stacks and blanket stitches. Shirley will also demonstrate rug hookings, another traditional fiber art. All materials supplied.
