6730 Mastering Smartphone Photography

This two-session course will provide a summary of photography fundamentals and how to apply them while using a smartphone or tablet camera. Part 1 of the class focuses on developing an understanding of photography basics and discusses limits of the cameras. It reviews the variables that affect the photo and how to control them in order to achieve the desired selective focus, depth of field, highlights, etc. and provides an overview of available tools such as phone grips, small tripods and external lighting. Part 2 will take the participant on a journey of how to select unusual images and avoid common stereotypes via real examples covering landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife and florals, spanning the use of internal and add-on lenses and filters. The emphasis will be on how to express an artist’s vision using the capabilities of a smartphone or tablet.
